MatrixGold Essentials is the latest fine jewellery CAD software package from Stuller (the owners of Gemvision), billed as the successor to both RhinoGold and Matrix. The interface is a streamlined hybrid between RhinoGold and Matrix, introducing dozens of new functions and “parametric” and direct 3D modelling options. Overall, it’s an across-the board upgrade of everything that was in Matrix 9, with a stack of new tools added on top.
As of this writing, MatrixGold CAD has had several years in which to work out any bugs it might have. What we have now is the most developed and evolved piece of software Stuller/Gemvision ever produced, and certainly more than a worthy successor to Matrix 9. What’s more, they keep adding more features.
To discuss specific advantages: MatrixGold CAD features all the core NURBS modelling tools and workflow of Rhino, but adds over a hundred extra jewellery specific tools to simplify and streamline workflow. They have also amplified Rhino’s history tools with a suite of parametric tools. This allows MatrixGold to do everything Rhino can do with precision assemblies and fitted components. It also means MatrixGold shines in situations with complicated stone setting arrangements.
MatrixGold’s main drawback relative to its competitors is its price. It remains one of the most expensive jewellery CAD programs on the market, even if you get what you pay for.
There is, of course, more to this discussion than what I’ve written above. I wrote a Frequently Asked Questions page all about the specific strengths and weaknesses of different jewellery CAD programs relative to each other.
